After a five match winning streak, and despite celebrating the captain's 200th game, Melbourne's bubble burst with their lowest score against the Tigers since Round 1, 1965.
Melbourne's forward line was flat, and not one of the key positions players managed to take a mark for the day.
Curiously the Tigers were goalless for almost half the game but still won comfortably thanks to a burst in the last quarter when they kicked 8.4 to 1.0 against their tiring MCG co-tenants.
Viney, Shanahan and Ingerson were amongst the best.
Matthew Febey was replaced in the selected side by Travis Johnstone due to a hamstring injury and Jeff Farmer suffered a corked calf.
Neale Daniher said "We were four points up (at three-quarter-time) and we had a lot to play for with Toddy's 200th, so it was very disappointing to fade out. The boys were flat from the start. We had a tough game against Sydney and we probably spent too much time on the track now, in retrospect. If we had our time over again we would have probably worked a bit harder in freshening the boys up."
