After bouncing back from a winless first month of the season with two wins the Demons came up against a Fitzroy side who had already won one game by a goal and lost two by three and one point respectively. Just when Melbourne appeared to be back on track they were beaten by the Lions in another thriller.
After a dismal first half for the Lions, Fitzroy came out the better side in the second half and kept Melbourne to just one goal. When Rod Grinter converted it gave his side a chance, but the last 10 minutes saw just one extra point scored and the Lions held on to win by the narrowest margin.
Best were Stynes, Tingay and Obst.
