Round 7, 1964
Melbourne vs Footscray
Saturday 30 May
Melbourne win by 42 points
Goalkickers: Barry Bourke 5, Ron Barassi 3, Ken Emselle 2, John Lord 1, John Townsend 1
After a tricky first half Melbourne shook off the determined visitors to record another victory which firmly established them in the top four. The Bulldogs had struggled to beat lowly South Melbourne at home the previous Saturday, so were not expected to give the in-form Demons a scare. They held on for the first half, using superior pace to stick with their more fancied opponents in a low scoring game, with their backline keeping Melbourne's forwards quiet.
After only taking a five point lead into the half courtesy of a Tony Anderson goal after the second quarter time siren, the home side immediately ended any speculation about the result by kicking five goals to one to lead by 38 points at the last break.
Best were Bourke, Adams and Barassi, who managed to kick three goals despite straining his groin when he slipped entering the ground. Barassi's tally was second only to Bourke, who kicked all his five goals in the second half.
Lord, originally named as a reserve, replaced Jacobs (who had cut his hand with an axe) in the selected side. Roet (broken hand) was replaced by Miller (who replaced Lord on the bench) at half time and Barassi (bruised thigh) by Robbie in the last quarter.
