South hadn't beaten Melbourne at the MCG since the Redlegs' winless 1919 season, and their run of outs continued with another defeat on King's Birthday Monday.
In a poor game South improved from recent disappointing performances, but poor kicking for goal their forward line ruined any chance of victory. The home side were also inaccurate, but sheer weight of numbers got them over the line in the end despite a brave performance by the South backline.
Warne-Smith, Coy and Thomas were best.
