After five wins in a row to start the season, the Demons suffered a surprise defeat against the Swans. Sydney hadn't won since Round 1 and were missing both Greg Williams or Gerard Healy, but after a tight first quarter edged away and despite falling narrowly behind at the last change came back to win.

Melbourne were poor in the forward line, and Sydney used the wind better in the second and fourth quarters to win,

Best were Stetch, Yeats and Spalding. Brian Wilson hurt his shoulder and Sean Wight suffered a season ending knee injury in the reserves.
