Round 6, 1983
Melbourne vs Sydney
Saturday 30 April
Melbourne win by 33 points
Goalkickers: Brian Wilson 7, Kelvin Templeton 4, Robert Flower 3, Les Bamblett 1, Adrian Battiston 1, Tony Elshaug 1, Kelly O'Donnell 1
The Demons won to level the ledger at 3-3 for the season, but in a sign of the increased expectations in 1983 Ron Barassi labelled a win over more than five goals "disgraceful". He claimed the only good thing to come out of the performance was his side collecting four points.
The first quarter had been highlighted by a handball happy Demon defence turning the ball over to the Swans on multiple occassions only for the Swans to miss the goals and fail to make it count. The ex-South Melbourne were further handicapped by losing two players, including ex-Demon Garry Baker to a broken cheekbone.
Brownlow Medallists Moore, Wilson and Templeton were their side's best. Wilson's seven goals and 4.5 from Templeton were the scores that got the side over the line and Moore dominated in the ruck. Giles was replaced by Wright in the selected side due to a groin injury.
"You take any aspect of football and we buggered it up" Barassi said, "That's our worst performance for the year". Barassi’s only positive words were for the likes of Brian Wilson, who kicked seven goals, “Apart from that, we took ineptitude to greater heights”.
Best were Wilson, Flower and Johnson.
