The Demons 10th league loss in a row represented a new unwanted 'record' for Norm Smith. He had threatened his players during the week that they could leave if they didn't want to play his way, and he reacted to their three goal performance against Carlton the week before by dropping four players, blooding one and switching Ross Dillon to full forward - his 6th in as many games.
For the first time all year Melbourne led at quarter time, and finally looked threatening against the Magpies who had lost just one game all season. They kicked just one goal in the second term to go into half-time 12 points behind but were just seven points behind at the last break.
Five minutes into the last quarter they hit the lead with two quick goals but the Pies hit back and slammed on the next six to win comfortably.
Of all the theories about why the season had started so poorly, the club’s elder statesmen couldn’t be blamed for this defeat. Brian Dixon, Tassie Johnson, Bryan Kenneally, Hassa Mann and Don Williams were all amongst their side’s best in a much improved performance.
Best were Dillon, Dixon and Johnson. Stan Alves replaced Leahy (cramp) in the last quarter and Rick Feldmann replaced Johnson (calf injury) in the last quarter.
