Despite improved performances earlier in the season Melbourne was still expected to be an easy kill for Richmond. Even with the use of the wind in the first quarter they changed ends narrowly behind, before Richmond piled on 10 goals before half time.

On a day where the ground was so muddy the umpire had to bounce the ball away from the circle, the game looked lost at three quarter time before a fightback almost stole victory. Melbourne could even have hit the lead, but captain-coach Percy Wilson ran into an open goal and missed. The margin was down to a point in the last minutes before two Richmond behinds led to the final margin.

Best were House, Ogilvy and Haines.

Richmond 12.8.80 d. Melbourne 8.11.58
