After winning their first game of the year a week earlier, Melbourne came back to earth against one of the league's newest sides on Easter Sunday.
Despite being beaten in almost every statistical category and outplayed throughout the day the Demons still won three of the four quarters, but threw the game away in a terrible second term where Gold Coast kicked the first four goals but missed several other sitters to keep Melbourne in the game.
Both sides were wasteful in the third, kicking 4.11 between them. Melbourne won the last quarter, but never got within a goal. A controversial free kick and goal to Gary Ablett - making up for a shocking decision review system judgement which gifted James Frawley a goal in the first quarter - gave the Suns breathing room, and despite Melbourne continually challenging in the last quarter they were only able to bring the margin back under 10 points thanks to a goal on the siren to Chris Dawes.
For the first time in VFL/AFL history players wore names on the back of their jumper as a trial.
Best were N. Jones, Viney and Dawes.
Michael Evans replaced Dom Tyson during the third quarter.
