North's first home game against Melbourne at the MCG was relocated from Arden Street, but the result was better financially for the 'visitors' on their own turf than it was for the new MCG tenant. The Roos needed 25,000 people to break even and didn't get it, while the Demons made more as the away side than they would have if the game had stayed at Arden Street.

Onfield where it counted North were winners, racking up their 16th consecutive victory over Melbourne. Peter Giles and Alan Johnson returned to strengthen the Demon side that had suffered a limp loss to Essendon a week earlier, and when Melbourne led by nearly three goals at half time it looked lik ethey might have been the catalyst for Melbourne's first win of the year.

North had started the year poorly, but they regained ground in the third quarter to take the lead with four goals in a row late in the term. Youngster Mark Lisle kicked six goals in his third game and the Roos ran away with it.

Best were Jarrott, Moore and Healy. Steven Smith had a dirty day, not only being beaten by Lisle but also suffering a shoulder injury.

Responding to public criticism of his coaching Ron Barassi said "If you listened to it, you wouldn't bother to be in football". He said from the next week Melbourne would take "big risks" to rack up their first win. The coach said that if there was a groundswell for him to be sacked he wouldn't be taking it seriously.
