Melbourne win by 2 points
The Demons won their third game in a row in a tight, controversial and often spiteful clash at Princes Park.
Marcus Seecamp and Brad Pearce were reported for striking each other after the quarter time siren. Pearce gave the defender a short one to the ribs, and Seecamp punched him in the head. He got three weeks and Pearce one.
The Demons lost Neitz with a broken ankle and Jim Stynes with a broken hand which would ultimately see his consecutive game streak stopped at 244, and that was the cue for a Carlton comeback. The Blues lifted and jumped to a three goal lead seven minutes into the last quarter.
A James McDonald goal levelled the scores with six minutes left, but there was serious questions about whether or it not it had actually gone through the big sticks. Two behinds put Melbourne in front before first gamer Nathan Brown won a crucial ball in the Carlton forward line. Nevertheless Carlton continued to attack for the last two minutes.
Eventually the Demons broke free and went inside 50, a duel between Craig Smoker and Run DeIulio saw the ball bounce of the Carlton players foot and run out of bounds. The clock had been down far enough and Melbourne had won.
Leoncelli, Steven Febey and Yze were amongst the best. Brown was impressive in a gutsy debut but wouldn't play another game until 2000 due to injuries.
