Two more debutants took to the field, taking the Demons tally to more than ten just a month into the season. Despite a much improved performance the inexperienced Dees suffered another loss.
Just two days after they had lost the final of the Lightning Premiership in extra time Melbourne was off to the Junction Oval to try and put their faltering season back on track.
The Saints edged ahead at the first quarter, but by half time Melbourne had the lead thanks mainly to McKenzie kicked four of his five goals in one four minute burst of brilliance.
A blistering third quarter attack by the home side swept them away though, and 8.1 gave St Kilda a lead that even a last quarter comeback couldn't quite overhaul. The loss left the Demons all alone on the bottom of the ladder as the only side without a win - their worst start to a season in 20 years.
Best were Arnold, McMahen and Collins.
