Melbourne slipped to 1-3 with their second straight loss, and their hope of playing top four football took an early blow. They were also playing to avoid 11th place, knowing that the team who was last at that point would miss the last five rounds of the season.
North were the better side earlier, and after negotiating some tough defence had a comfortable lead at quarter time. The home side kicked the first goal of the second quarter, but Melbourne's efforts were soon rewarded with goals. By the half the Demons had climbed back to just eight points behind. The Shinboners then kicked away, with six goals to one in the third term.
Two goals early in the last quarter gave the Demons an outside hope of victory, but relentless attack by North kept them at bay long enough to win comfortably.
Best were Don Cordner, Ted Cordner and McPherson. Deans replaced Smith (injured) in the first quarter.
