Coming off a heavy loss against West Coast in Perth, the media focus had already turned to the Demons and their winless start to the year.
Melbourne stayed with the Tigers for the first half, but were blown away by a nine goal third quarter and despite breaking even in the final term the damage had already been done.
Lynden Dunn replaced Stefan Martin during the third quarter.
Howe, Jones and Watts were Melbourne's best. Jack Grimes was reported for a sling tackle and suspended for one week. Nathan Jones received a $900 fine for making contact with the umpire.
