After two losses to start the season the Demons went to the Gabba to play a Bears side who finished six wins behind them on the 1992 ladder. At their new permanent home the Bears record attendance saw their side extended a 26 point half time lead to 43 before a storming comeback by the Demons.
From 43 behinds Melbourne then went on a 9.6.60-0 run to take a 17 point lead at the last change. Bears coach Robert Walls rallied his troops at three quarter time and it was their turn to turn the tables by keeping Melbourne to two goals in the last term and taking the lead seven minutes into the quarter.
Best were Lovell, Viney and G. Lovett.
Matthew Febey was reported for striking Danny Noonan with a right arm to the head and suspended for two matches, despite his claims that he was trying to knock the ball from Noonan's hand and contacted his shoulder. Haydn Robins was also suspended for two matches for striking David Bain.
