Melbourne had to win to assure themselves of a finals position, and they did it in style with their equal 14th highest score in VFL/AFL football - and statistically the most accurate goalkicking performance in the club's history.
Their brilliant attacking football - which condemned Sydney to a third straight wooden spoon - was highlighted by a career best nine goals from David Schwarz and a further five from Martin Pike - scoring 14.0 between them. Three of Schwarz's four third quarter goals came from difficult angles. Garry Lyon also kicked five but was responsible for three of his side's behinds.
Defeat condemned the Swans to their third consecutive wooden spoon.
Best were Schwarz, Lyon and Charles. Glenn Lovett suffered a hamstring injury, Andy Lovell hurt his thigh, Darren Kowal his shoulder and Sean Wight played with a virus and was restricted to one disposal.
