Despite being 0-17 for the season and not having won a game for 364 days the Giants went in the bookies' favourite on the back of a number of encouraging performance. Melbourne, on the other hand, had seen their brief revival since the appointment of Neil Craig crash and burn in a 20 goal loss to North Melbourne.
Both teams started brightly, with the Giants taking a narrow lead into quarter time before Melbourne kicked themselves into trouble with inaccurate shooting on goal in the second. The home side were more accurate, and opened up a lead of just over three goals at the long break.
Melbourne were poor in the opening minutes of the third quarter but recovered to dominate the second part of the quarter and get within striking distance at the last change. With memories of their 12 goal avalanche which got them out of jail against GWS in their last clash fresh in the mind the Giants didn't fall into the same trap, kicking away to win comfortably and almost certainly dash any hopes Craig had of taking over the coaching role full-time.
Best were Jones, Clisby and Viney.
Aaron Davey replaced Max Gawn during the third quarter.
