Having blown their chances of sneaking into the finals two weeks earlier the Demons put in a poor performance at Collingwood, drawing within four goals only when the double chance bound Magpies went into self-preservation mode in the final term.

Long overdue changes to the side in the second half helped Melbourne, and a burst of five goals in the last quarter made the match look respectable but clearly Collingwood were seeing ahead to their massive clash with Geelong in the semi-final.

Carroll and Lehman were 19th and 20th men.
