After a loss to Hawthorn a week earlier, Melbourne remained nothing more than a mathematical chance of qualifying for the finals but kept the pressure up anyway with a fighting win.
The game swung on the wind in the first half, with Melbourne taking a six goal lead at the first break before going into half-time two points behind. Five goals to no score in the third quarter built up a 35 point buffer against the breeze, and while Footscray won the quarter comfortably they were too far behind and were left with their own slim finals chances hanging by a thread.
