The Demons were disappointing on their trip to Geelong, but despite the heavy loss Smith won plaudits for keeping Gary Ablett goalless - which went some way to reducing the margin to a manageable ten goals instead of a repeat of the the massacre they had suffered in Round 1.
Any chance of the match being a high quality spectacle was ruined by the damaged turf, especially in the centre wicket area. Geelong gradually pulled away in the heavy conditions and Melbourne put themselves out of the contest by kicking just one goal in the middle two quarters. Jeff Farmer had been exciting early, kicking two first quarter goals, but after he was stopped by Michael Mansfield there were no other attacking options left to Neale Balme.
Best were Smith, Tingay and Obst.
