Playing to stay alive in the finals race, Melbourne had to contend with seven goals from Jason Dunstall as they crashed to defeat. The margin was only a point at half time before Dunstall kicked four to held his side to a 22 point lead. Neale Balme refused to take Phil Gilbert off him, saying that none of his other players could have stopped the Hawthorn champion either.
Down the other end the missing Allen Jakovich was replaced ineffectively by Darren Cuthbertson and Rod Grinter, who only got three between them.
