Victory a week earlier gave the Demons a slim chance of sneaking into the five, but standing in their way were the top of the ladder Hawks who had only lost one game all season and carried a percentage advantage of nearly 70 points. Hawthorn had won their previous meeting that year by nine goals and justifiably went in as red hot favourites.

So when the three quarter time siren sounded with Melbourne eight points in front the MCG was set to play host to the upset of the season. The Hawks struck early with three quick goals but the home side weren't yet done for and levelled the scores again. It was only when Leigh Matthews won the ball from the centre and kicked a miracle goal that the Hawks were home.

Best were Hardeman, Fowler and Keays. Graham and Coles was replaced by Osborne and Sparks respectively in the last quarter.
