Three wins and a sizeable percentage behind second last Hawthorn, Melbourne's match with St Kilda represented almost their last chance to avoid their first wooden spoon since 1919.
They made life difficult for the visitors, but in the end the match was another example of a game thrown away by poor kicking and inexperience with one goal from seven shots in the second quarter effectively putting the Demons out of the match.
The Saints struggled to break away and in the last quarter the Demons drew level when Jack Thomson goalled but they couldn't get their nose in front and the visitors steadied to win by two goals.
Beckwith, Woods and Collins were best.
George O'Keeffe was reporting for attempted striking and Bob McKenzie for attempted striking. They were suspended for two and four matches respectively.
