After a disappointing start to the season, the Bombers were pushing towards the top eight, while Melbourne languished at the bottom with just two wins and one sacked coach to show for their 1997 campaign.

Melbourne kicked the first goal of the afternoon through Sean Charles but quickly succumbed to the superior opposition and were two goals behind at quarter time. A brief comeback in the second quarter got them to within three points before Essendon kicked away again.

8.1 from Matthew Lloyd, matched up against a clearly unfit Shaun Smith, only fell eight points short of the entire Melbourne score but for the second week in a row Melbourne hung with their more fancied opponents for the first two and a bit quarters before falling apart.

When Jeff Farmer and Brent Grgic got the first two goals of the last quarter the deficit was back to eight points, but they wouldn't kick another goal until the final minute of play as Essendon helped themselves to 10. The wheels started to fall off when the boundary umpire mistakenly called a kick out of bounds, and Ricky Ollerenshaw goalled while Melbourne players were arguing the call.

Best were G.Lovett, S. Febey and Stynes. David Schwarz hurt his hamstring and Shaun Smith his knee. The defeat left Melbourne three games and percentage adrift at the bottom of the ladder.
