After their loss to top of the table Geelong a week earlier the Demons were no more than a mathematical chance of playing in the finals. They did their bit by winning, but results elsewhere kept the door to the top four locked. They were stuck two and a half games behind fourth with four to play. An easy run home, mostly against sides at the bottom of the ladder, offered some hope but their chances of appearing in September were still slender.
After a run of rainy days, the skies cleared in time for the match but left a muddy ground. The Saints initially handled the conditions better, holding Melbourne goalless until late in the first quarter, when a three goal explosion by Noel Clarke gave his side a comfortable lead.
The second quarter was a more even affair, with the Demons narrowly increasing their margin. By half-time Clarke had kicked 5.3 including two posters.
Inaccuracy costs the Saints any change of a come from behind victory in the last quarter.
Best were McGivern, Clarke and McLean
Despite the win the Demons remained 10 points behind fourth place with four games to play. They had an easy run home, mostly against teams at the bottom of the ladder but it still left them with a slender chance of playing finals.
