First Goal
Graham Osborne (2nd game)
Graham Osborne became the 10th man in 13 weeks to play in the seemingly cursed full-forward position. Luckily for Osborne, who had 'debuted' as an unused reserve a week earlier, he had been given the job in an eminently winnable game against 10th placed Hawthorn. While Osborne was a contributor with two goals, it was Ed Burston who did the damage with six - the most by a Melbourne player since 1961.
The injury depleted Hawks had won just one more game than Melbourne, and boosted by the return of Brian Dixon the Demons powered to a huge confidence building win. The two teams had battled manfully in the first half with the two defences dominating, but 16 goals to five after half time set up a massive victory. The win lifted Melbourne above Hawthorn into 10th on percentage.
Best were Johnson, Bourke and Dixon. Dixon went down again in the last quarter with a pinched nerve around the same knee injury that had just kept him on the sidelines for six weeks. He was replaced by Feldmann, while Stewart (hamstring) went off for Rowe at quarter time.
