For the second year the Reds returned from a mid-season trip to Tasmania to receive a thrashing. Despite a bright start when they kept the Maroons goalless in the opening they failed to score in the second and were beaten 12.10 to 2.8 from there.
In a week where a smallpox scare had swept across Melbourne, leading to the suggestion that matches might have to be postponed to give players time to recover from the effects of a vaccine against the disease, it was the visiting side who played like they were ill after quarter time - registering the lowest score of the day.
Robertson was one of the few to come out of the match with any credit.
