The biggest crowd for a match between the two clubs since Round 11, 2006, and the second highest since the 1988 Semi Final saw the Demons take on the reigning premiers on the back of breaking a three game losing streak with an emotional victory against Essendon.
Despite opening with the first two goals of the game Melbourne were murdered in the inside 50's, with the final total being the third widest gap between two teams on record.
The Demons found it hard to score but a resolute defensive effort left them just seven goals down at three quarter time despite Collingwood's dominance but the Pies were the form team in fourth quarters and ran away by kicking 8.5 to 1.0.
Best were Sylvia, Macdonald and Scully. Jack Trengove was fined $1800 for umpire contact, his second fine in a row for the charge.
Michael Evans was substituted on to replace Neville Jetta at three-quarter time. Clint Bartram was a late replacement for Daniel Nicholson.
