North Melbourne win by 13 points
Having risen to third place on the ladder, kept off the top only on percentage, by beating West Coast a week earlier the Demons returned to the MCG - as the away team this time - to take on a North side who were struggling at 3-8.
Halfway through the first quarter it looked as if the formbook was going to be followed. On heavy turf the Demons were full of run and were only one functioning forward line away from racking up a huge victory.
Then in the second quarter it all started to go wrong. In just ten minutes North brought out all the run that had been missing in the first term and it swept the Demons off their feet. A five goal blitz in the soggy conditions saw them take a ten point lead into the long break and their backline were firmly on top of the contest. Only one Melbourne player kicked two goals, but Ricky Jackson had a total of 2.5.
Melbourne threatened comebacks in the second half but they were rebuffed each time and North held on to victory in a clash that showed the Demons were suspect in heavy conditions.
