In his previous visit to the SCG at Demons coach John Northey had seen his side massacred by more than 20 goals, and while the result was some 90 points better off the second time around it didn't do much for his side's sliver of hope of making the finals.
In the presence of Prime Minister Bob Hawke, the Swans raced to an early lead thanks to Melbourne's shocking inaccuracy. Warwick Capper who was being well held by Danny Hughes, but would eventually emerge from Hughes' shadow to kick five later in the game.
Steve O'Dwyer dominated in the ruck but his teammates were unable to take advantage. The Swans kicked four goals in a row in the first quarter to open a 15 point lead, and both teams kicked two goals during the second term.
Brian Wilson helped sparked the third quarter revival, he suffered a broken finger and was reported for striking Gerard Healy but dragged his team back into contention. Bret Bailey goalled to put his side in front at the 10 minute mark but Sydney struck back through Capper a few minutes later. Melbourne's revival only lasted briefly into the last quarter when the Swans ran over the top. Wilson was ultimately found not guilty.
Despite Sean Wight reducing the margin when he converted his 'mark of the day' into a goal after the siren the Demons still ran out near six goal losers and found themselves two games out of the five.
John Northey lamented defeat by saying "it was our worst performance of the year. We surrendered like a conquered nation, the spectators should be given their money back".
After the game Capper was attacked by one of the supporters who ran on the ground at the final siren. He was rescued by a Sydney trainer and police, with a man charged on summons for the incident.
Best were O'Dwyer, Wight and Yeats
