Shortly after the start of the game steady rain began to fell and it continued for an hour, rendering the ground almost unplayable. Before the ball became too waterlogged to play properly with Melbourne showed some excellent football to open up a five point lead at quarter time.
The second quarter was distinctly in Melbourne's favour, and by now all kicks were coming off the ground because it was impossible to play normal football. They opened up a six goal lead, giving them a buffer against Geelong as they tired in the last quarter and the visitors came at them.
Notes
Newspaper reports refer to a "Jackson" (sic) playing for Melbourne, with the implication that he was appearing under a false name. He was one of Joe Hodgkins or Jack Strong.
Attendance described as 'poor'
