Former Demon and Magpie Shane Woewodin was paraded around the ground before the match as a tribute to his career. Despite his acrimonious exit from Melbourne, the former Brownlow Medal winner's kids wore Melbourne jumpers.
Seven members of the 1956 premiership were also present to recapture the memories of a great era. Adams, Beckwith, Carroll, Dixon, Laidlaw, Lane and Spencer were once again the names on everybody's lips as they recalled the glorious Melbourne hat-trick side of the '50s. Stuart Spencer even provided an original 1956 penny for the coin toss. Fittingly David Neitz was the toss and kicked with the wind. Four goals to two in the first quarter laid a platform for the win, and between the domination of the midfield and the forward line wizardry of Queen's Birthday specialist Adem Yze the Pies were no match.
