After passing the club goal record of Norm Smith two weeks earlier, David Neitz also went past the games record of Robert Flower and celebrated with a match-winning eight goal performance. Neitz kicked the first three goals of the game, and had six at half time.

Melbourne led by 41 points early in the third quarter. St Kilda rallied, kicking five goals to two for the term and cutting the gap to 14 points at the last change. Neale Daniher was happy with his side's first half performance, but suggested they overdid their chipping of the ball after that while trying to slow the game's tempo. "I thought we looked a lot better" said Daniher, "but you have to play a full game". They were returning from a loss to West Coast, and as several clubs had put in shocking performances after playing in Perth, they had to dig in during the last quarter to avoid an embarassing collapse. By the last few minutes a fatigued Melbourne were under siege but held on to win.

Best were Neitz, McLean and Johnstone. Moloney (groin) was replaced in the selected side by Simon Godfrey. Matthew Whelan injured his hip.
