The Demons first win since 7 July the year before snapped a 19 game run of outs that had seen the end of a coach and numerous players. The last time they had tasted victory they were an outside chance of making the finals, but now Melbourne were playing to try and avoid the wooden spoon.
A mistake riddled first half performance let the Lions take the lead, but on a windy day at the MCG Melbourne's younger players helped them over the line. Despite their terrible recent record it was Melbourne's fourth consecutive win over the Lions.
Best were Sullivan, Flower and Delmenico. Alves (back) was replaced by Collins in the last quarter. Kerley was an unused reserve.
