After a poor 1949 season, the Demons were drawn against the previous years' runners-up. It promised to be a good early test for Melbourne and they came through with flying colours.

With better ball-handling and an aerial superiority the Demons were on top by half-time, but it took until halfway through the last quarter before they sealed the deal. Carlton had been on top early in the first quarter, but Melbourne's defence held firm and gave them the opportunity to kick the first two goals. They lead by three goals at quarter time, and maintained the lead at the half with Ken Rollason already kicking five goals.

The lead peaked at 27 points before being dragged back to two. In the last quarter Bob McKenzie goalled to make the margin comfortable again before Denis Cordner took two marks close to goal and scored to finish the game off.

McGivern and Spencer were impressive on debut and Lance Arnold went to centre-half back after failing as a forward. McKenzie suffered a broken hand.

Best were Woods, McGrath and Rule. Bowman replaced Rule (ankle) and Carlon replaced Jackson (cramp). McKenzie suffered a broken hand. Geoff Collins was a late withdrawal.
