Despite being in Essendon's recruiting zone, and spending time with the Bombers as a 16-year-old, Hickmott didn't join the club full time. A broken hand in 1989 led to them passing on him and allowing him to go into the pre-season draft where Melbourne picked him up.
He played two games in a row during 1990 and remained on the list in 1991 but didn't play another senior match and was delisted in June of that year.
After leaving the VFL Hickmott moved to Murray Bridge, South Australia to join his father training horses. He played football there but broke his leg and eventually moved back to Melbourne.
As private trainer for Lloyd Williams he later steered Zipping to a win in the Group 1 2010 Australian Cup and Green Moon to the 2012 Melbourne Cup. In 2013 he won the Caulfield Cup with Fawkner.
