Despite being in Essendon's recruiting zone, and spending time with the Bombers as a 16-year-old, the ruck/rover didn't join the club full-time. Unable to break into the Essendon side, a broken hand affected him in 1989 and he was let go at the end of the season.
Melbourne took him in the 1990 pre-season, and he played two games that year. Hickmott remained on the list in 1991 but didn't play another senior match and was delisted in June of that year.
After leaving the VFL Hickmott moved to Murray Bridge, South Australia to join his father training horses. He played football there but broke his leg and eventually moved back to Melbourne.
As private trainer for Lloyd Williams he later steered Zipping to a win in the Group 1 2010 Australian Cup and Green Moon to the 2012 Melbourne Cup. In 2013 he won the Caulfield Cup with Fawkner.
