Originally drafted by West Coast with selection #60 in the 1997 National Draft, Read won their Best First Year Player award in his first season. He played 74 games for the Eagles over four seasons but was best known in the Eastern states for his role in the 2000 "Demolition Derby" brawl against Fremantle. Suspended for two weeks as a result of his stoush with Dale Kickett, Read didn't play again until 2003 because of two pre-season knee injuries. He returned to the Eagles lineup in 2003 for eleven games - including the last eight of the year - but was delisted at the end of the season.

Given another opportunity with Melbourne, Read played 21 games in 2004, including two goals in the losing Elimination Final. Hamstring injuries kept him to just eight games in 2005, and after five more in 2006 he was delisted. His last act as a Melbourne player was a best-on-ground performance in a Sandringham VFL Grand Final victory. He was the Zebras' best and fairest that year.

In 2007 Read signed with the Geelong VFL side, but soon returned to Perth, playing in Subiaco's 2008 WAFL Premiership. Read finished equal 7th in the 2009 Sandover Medal with 23 votes despite missing the last two months of the season with a broken foot suffered in a surfing accident. His final season of senior football was 2010.
