DOB: 12 April 1981
From: North Heidelberg/Northern Knights, Selection #20, 1999 National Draft
Number: 31 (2000-2009)
A former Reserves top-up player for Collingwood (four games) and North Melbourne (one game), Wheatley attracted Melbourne's attention with his performances in the 1999 Under-18 national championships. Drafted at the end of 1999, he played 12 games in his rookie season but missed finals due to a hamstring injury. The next year he played another 16, and a further 18 in 2002, despite another hamstring injury costing him six weeks.
Renowned as one of the longest kicks in the competition, Wheatley kicked the first 9 point goal under modified pre-season cup rules. His 2003 season was otherwise short on highlights, playing just five games while battling form issues and two separate hamstring injuries. Wheatley returned as a regular in 2004 and 2005 but was back down to seven games in 2006, a year in which he played in the Sandringham premiership side.
