North were underdogs, but carried the game to Melbourne in the first quarter and took a narrow lead into the first change of ends. The Reds were better in the second quarter, hammering the North Melbourne goal to kick two goals from nine attempts.

The second half was all Melbourne, adding three more goals to nil and winning comfortably.

A clock with an automatic buzzer to signal the end of each quarter was trialled.

Best were Rusden, McGowan and Garton.
