Melbourne win by 3 goals

The visiting South Australians were not a big draw in comparison to the Geelong vs Hotham game on around the corner at the East Melbourne ground but the fans who stayed away missed Melbourne's first win in any match for the year.
After four straight VFA losses to start the year it was a welcome relief when they got to be the aggressor for once, attacking first but only scoring a behind. After the restart both the Coulson brothers also added minors, before C. Coulson received a free after having a mark interfered with and converted from a place kick.
Port eqialised soon after, and had the chance to take the lead when they besieged the Melbourne. George Aitken was penalised for holding the ball near goal and the visitors converted to go in front with a kick from 60 yards out.
Down a goal Melbourne then attacked, scoring three behinds in quick succession before Ross seized a throw in and passed to Plant to score Melbourne's second and they remained on top for the rest of the first half, with C. Coulson putting them in front at the long break courtesy of his second goal.
McCrindle got the first goal of the second half to extend the cushion to two goals, but Port challenged with a goal of their own followed by three behinds. They appeared to be gaining the upper hand before the reds extracted the ball and got it forward to Stubbs who scored the fifth for his side. Port got a fourth of their own but Melbourne booted three more goals to register a comfortable win.
Best were Carroll, Tuckfield and C. Coulson.
