May 1880 match vs West Melbourne

Saturday 22 May - MCG
Crowd: 1000

Melbourne 5.14
West Melbourne 1.3 (half time 0.9-1)

Melbourne win by 4 goals

Goalkickers: Fred Baker 2, John Macdonald 1, Roberts 1, Dave Aitken 1

A second straight win in a row continued Melbourne's good start to the 1880 VFA season. They hadn't played any of the top sides yet, but it was a good start nevertheless.

A light wind was in favour of West Melbourne in the first half, but on the field Melbourne were dominant. After kicking 24 behinds a week earlier it was shown that they weren't attacking at their full capacity, and they were inaccurate again with nine behinds. They were punished when West Melbourne scored a lucky goal near the half time break to take the lead.

In contrast to the first half West Melbourne were the better side early, but their play and the surprise of being behind sparked the home team and they soon took the lead through goals to Macdonald and Roberts. From then on the play was all in their favour and more goals came from F. Baker and D. Aitken.

West defended grimly and stopped a number of attacks but conceded one more goal to Baker to end the match.

Nash, Longden and Watson were best.
