A defender, Hislop was discarded by Collingwood after nine games, but lasted just one more with the Redlegs before he retired from football convinced that he wasn't good enough to make it at VFL level.
Boarding with a friend in Richmond he was convinced to try out at Punt Road and went on to play more than a hundred matches. He played in three Grand Finals, and was best on ground in two Tigers wins.
He retired after the 1924 season and moved to Tasmania to coach Newtown in 1925 and 1926 but returned for a final year with Richmond in 1927. After leaving Richmond the second time he coached Carnegie in 1929, Glenhuntly in 1935 and 1936 and Parkdale for two seasons from 1938.
May have played VFA between '24 and '27. Some sources say he played for a local club before joining Richmond.
Some sources shown him wearing #31 in 1915 but all Football Records from that year show him in #5
