Louis Andrew "Lou" Riley was born in Sydney, but had been a star forward in Ballarat when he came to attention of league clubs after kicking 11 of his side's 13 goals against a visiting Collingwood side in 1931. Melbourne won his services and he joined the Redlegs midway through 1932.
Riley had a successful first season, and returned a goal a game in 1933 before moving to Collingwood halfway through 1934. He played in two Magpie Premierships during 1935 and 1936, and remained with the side until the end of 1938 before retiring.
Some sources say his first name started with A and some say his name was Louis.
