The Reds dominated their opponents with superior "passing on and handball", but Richmond put up a better fight than expected despite losing by a heavy margin. Melbourne were well on top in the first quarter before their opponents regrouped and made a game of it.
Throughout the season Melbourne's rucks had been beating all comers, and they did it again not only in the centre but also in adding six goals.
Many of Melbourne's attacks were snuffed out by their old player Dick Kelly who had crossed to Richmond and had been made their captain for that match.
Best were Moysey, Christy and Roche, whose six goals came after he was a late inclusion to replace an injured player.
It was the most goals the club had ever kicked in a VFA game.
