Melbourne win by 2 goals
Goalkickers: Baird 2, Carroll 1, Griffith 1
A week after their first win of the season, Melbourne welcomed the newly promoted Prahran side who had just achieved senior status and earned their second victory in a row.
Despite Melbourne's breakthrough the previous Saturday, fans were drawn to a more interesting match at East Melbourne and a paltry crowd saw the first ever match between the two sides. The players arrived late, leading those few who had shown up to think the game was called off.
Even though they won, Melbourne were pushed all the way by the VFA newcomers. Neither side scored for 15 minutes from the start of the game until Melbourne got two behinds in a row. They eventually scored courtesy of a shot on goal falling to Baird who converted.
Prahran equalised in the second quarter, and were had just one behind less to show for their efforts when the bell rang for half time. Baird got a second goal after the break, but it took two last quarter goals through Carroll and Griffith to put them away. Prahran got a consolation with the last kick of the game but it was too late.
Best were Millard, Griffith and Baird.
