Saturday 24 June - Melbourne Ground
Crowd: 4000-5000
Melbourne 8.8
Norwood 1.5 (half time 4.4-0.3)
Melbourne win by 7 goals
Goalkickers: Sloman 2, E. Longden 1, McKie 1, Carr 1, Rannard 1, Ulbrick 1, Stiffe 1
The visitors were premiers of South Australia, but their reputation had been battered by a severe loss to South Melbourne a week earlier. Melbourne hadn't yet won a game for the year against a senior side, but they still went in as warm favourites.
Early on the script was followed, with Melbourne bombarding the South Australian goal and Longden pushed the ball across the line for the first major of the game. They scored three more, and while Norwood occassionally attacked they were eld at bay by McKenzie and Thewlis.
The second half offered little respite for Norwood, and Melbourne slammed through three more in double quick time. At 7-0 down the visitors finally got their first goal of the match, but Stiffe scored the 8th and last goal of the game.
Best were McKenzie, Thewlis and Stiffe.
Notes
Some sources have McKenzie kicking a goal instead of one of Sloman's.
