Played one game in 1972, and missed all the next season before returning for two more games in 1974.

The next year he joined Footscray, where he stayed for seven seasons. He continued to be used sparingly for his first two seasons, playing just one game in each year before finally becoming a fixture in the side

In 1982 he joined the recently relocated Sydney and spent two years with the Swans. He was later their Reserves coach and football manager.

His father Bruce Snr played 28 games at Footscray, and his brother Bruce Jnr 119 for Footscray and Carlton.

Collingwood player Ben Reid and Sydney Swans played Sam Reid are his nephews.
