A Thirds and Seconds ruckman from 1949 onwards, Ferguson was promoted to the senior side in 1950. He spent time on the fringe of the Demons side as a ruckman/defender, never playing more than six games in a season, before being cleared to South Melbourne in early 1955.
Ferguson was more successful with South, playing 25 games in three seasons, also appearing for the Swans' summer basketball team. His father Jack had also played for South between 1926 and 1928.
