A pacy wingman who played six and a half post-war seasons for Essendon, including as vice captain in 1923. He missed out on their Grand Final victory that year, but won a premiership in 1924 when the title was decided in a round robin format.

Despite a late complication where he had to be cleared from VFL newcomers North Melbourne, whose residential area he lived in, Sullivan joined Melbourne midway through the 1925 season and played six matches to end his senior career. He was captain/coach of the Melbourne Seconds from 1926 to 1928.
