Played more than 50 reserve games with St. Kilda and the Demons and spent the entire 1993 season in the Melbourne seconds. After an off-season fitness campaign where he lost eight kilograms, Hilton broke into the senior side in 1994. Despite showing glimpses of brilliance he could never cement a permanent place in the Melbourne lineup and left at the end of 1996.

Hilton later claimed that he had sought a release from the last year of his contract to join Footscray during the trade period, and that a swap had been arranged for Bulldog Darryl Griffin before Footscray's board overruled their football department and vetoed the trade. Hilton was then delisted by the Demons.

Joined WAFL side Peel Thunder in 1997 where he linked up with former teammate Phil Gilbert. Hilton returned to Melbourne to play for Rye in 2001 but was kept to a handful of games by back injuries.
